Day in the life of a Senior Software Engineer at Sabio
Jonathan Dilks tells us a little about what it's like to work at Sabio as a Senior Software Engineer (SSE).
What attracted you to Sabio?
Being able to use my breadth of skills and knowledge to not only contribute to improving existing customer projects, but the opportunity to design new unique CX (customer experience) projects too.
When did you join Sabio?
March 2021.
Tell us about your role?
Mentoring more junior software engineers and sharing knowledge and experience of the particular technologies or software development in general.
Staying abreast of multiple in flight projects to ensure development stays on track and solutions are robust and follow good practices.
What is a typical day for you?
My morning consist of a couple of stand-ups with both internal teams and customers where we catch-up and co-ordinate tasks. In the afternoon, it usually consists of either longer planning sessions and actual development work. This is either independent or collaborative depending on the best way to tackle the requirement or problem being tackled.
What do you love most about your role?
Being able to contribute on a daily basis with friendly and supportive colleagues all levels!
What are the challenges?
Knowing when to stop deep-diving into a problem and accept it simply isn’t going to be solvable and it’s time to think around it! As well of course, engineering and delivery never being as simple as initially hoped and dealing with those challenges and pressures as they come up.
What skills do you need to be a successful SSE?
Being able to research and understand problems independently that very few people currently understand and then take the lead in sharing some knowledge with the team and our customers on a level that makes sense to them. Interpersonal skills to collaborate, understand and resolve the organisational problems as well as the technical problems that can and nearly always do occur along the way.
What do you enjoy the most about Sabio?
The culture of people and collaboration throughout the business. And colleagues always being able to help each other out and share knowledge, experience and encouragement of one another!
So, what is a day in the life of a SSE?
Collaborative, investigative, creative and constructive.
